Have you been searching for the “mute button” on certain channels of your mind?  Are their channels in your mind which you have become so accustomed to listening to and yet, they leave you feeling exhausted?  Would you like to have the ability to “mute” whenever you chose?  If so, lets take a moment to understand this power to stop, to pause, to mute by  bringing to mind, the tortoise, one of the longest lived, peaceful creatures on the planet.  What does a tortoise do in a moment of danger?  It withdraws into the safety of its shell.  With one powerful movement, what was once on the outside and visible, moving about and exploring, eating or walking, a slow moving target, suddenly disappears from sight completely.  This one immediate action will save the tortoise from its demise again and again.

How does this apply to you, a complex, fast moving, fast thinking human being?  I’m nothing like a tortoise you may very well be saying to yourself. True enough, physcially you are nothing like a tortoise.  The aspect of you that can be understood through the wisdom of the tortoise is your state of mind.    When your mind is racing, making up stories from the past and being your task master, there can be so many thoughts that you, the master of the body and mind are out of control, anxious, exhausted, unstable, vulnerable, and sad. You have gone deep into dangerous territory.  How can the tortoise help you now?  What would the tortoise do when faced with such danger?  It would stop on a dime and withdraw completely from action!

This example can be applied to the mind. No matter how much the expansion of thoughts has taken over, no matter how much water has gone under the bridge, no matter how much you have been raked over the coals, apply a full stop and merge all thoughts in one second!  Tortoises have been merging by pulling into their shells, for such a long time, that now it is their true nature, even a baby tortoise knows the game of life!   As humans, we  must begin practicing this kind of response to the danger of the mind taking over.

It requires consistent, daily practice over a long period of time. The sooner you start, the sooner you will experience success in putting a full stop to wasteful, exhausting, and destructive thoughts.

This practice of stopping and applying a brake to your thoughts can be enhanced by the practice of meditation.  And in turn, the practice of meditation can strengthen your power to put a full stop and to merge all thoughts into a deep experience of the self as a soul in communion with a Benevolent Power.

The most powerful stage of meditation is known as the seed stage.  All expansion of thought ceases;  you become free from the burden of heavy thoughts of the mind, free from the constant questioning of the intellect, and free from past impressions.  All three of these aspects of the soul are no longer “managing you”; you have let go and gone beyond them.  In the seed stage, the final stage, the only awareness is of being full and complete, of being a soul  bathing in eternal moments of stillness and beauty, our original state.

Coming back to our original state is so worth the practice of mastering the mind, intellect, and ingrained patterns of behavior.  This practice is what the ancients called YOGA~ coming into true union ~the eternal self with the eternal Beloved in the eternal moment.

This is the aim and objective of the practice of Raja Yoga, the ancient, venerable practice that creates the emergence of  purity, happiness,  peace, bliss and spiritual power in the soul.

And to think,  this all began by thinking about the innate wisdom of the tortoise, who withdraws from all action to preserve its life.  As we learn to withdraw from the grip of the mind, from the habits and the relentless questions, we too preserve our life, our life as a soul, our life as a master almighty authority, and we create a life that blossoms because of living from our true nature.

What does it Mean to Wake Up?

  1. Hanalei Bay

QUESTION:   What is the Soul? Is the soul somehow different from what we experience as our personality?

2nd QUESTION: How would I define “waking up”?

3rd QUESTION:  And if one wakes up, what is one waking up to?

ANSWER:                          It is I, the Soul who is Waking Up
The ponderings I have about “who am I?” and “what does it mean to awaken?” are questions I use in my daily practice of meditation and study.
A meditation, similar to the one below is worth practicing  to remember who you are and to assist others in the wondrous play of “waking up” to living in a soul-consciousness state.

~MEDITATION ON SELF~

Sitting here quietly, I turn my attention inward and slip easily into the softness of my inner world. As my focus on the inside deepens so does the breath. One long peaceful breath after another takes me into the awareness of a natural inner peace. Basking in this awareness, allows the muscles of the body to begin letting go and increases circulation throughout the internal organs, including the brain.

At my core, I am Peace and I enjoy finding peaceful ways of moving from stillness into action to express this peaceful nature.
I am the soverign authority of this chariot. It is I who sees through these eyes, hears through these ears, tastes through this mouth, and feels joy and happiness, pain and sorrow.
I the soul enjoy reflecting upon my true nature of peace to keep the organs of sensory perception peaceful too. I the soul sit in this body in the seat of self respect located behind the center of my forehead. I wish to extend the essence of peace into all that I think, say, and do.
From this place of peace, I begin to remember another place, another Home, the original home of all souls, and I am magnetically pulled there. Like a celestial bird, I fly past the earth’s gravity, past the moon, the sun, and the stars, which are sitting in the canopy of the sky. I fly, on the wings of one, determined thought, straight to the sweet, silent Home. Just ahead, I see the beautiful world of golden-red Divine Light. As always, I am embraced by the deep and infinite Ocean of Love who fills up my reservoir of peace, love, and bliss, allowing me to let go of layer upon layer of impressions that have been picked up through time spent on earth.
It is in the silence and peace of this One, that I ask myself: Who Am I, anyway? I the soul, listen with the faith and trust of an innocent child.
“You, are a spark of consciousness, an infinitesimal point of Light In form, you are just like Myself, for you are my beloved child. You are eternal, free, and ever alive. You are a reservoir of light, power, truth, love, peace, and bliss. You can charge up the battery of the soul by being in contact with Me, as much as possible, through your awareness. You belong to Me; I belong to you. Remember Me to become like Me… once again.”
I am so nourished by knowing my own nature, which had been obscured for so long by the many costumes I have worn through time. I, the long, lost child have now been found! I am Home.
Yes, these are the thoughts that can take you beyond the ego and the personality which have been created by the many impressions that have accumulated throughout your lifetimes of experiences.
These truths take one beyond the limited “I”, beyond the self-image composed of eccentricities and complexes, of habits and preferences, of fears, and loves. I, the soul observe from a distance the role I have been playing out upon this world stage of life.
“Going beyond” what appears to be “me” and “mine” is a fundamental part of my spiritual practice, a practice which allows me to touch into the core values of I the living, eternal Soul. Peace is my original state along with Love, Truth, Purity, Power, and Bliss. These aspects are the essence of all souls.
I, the unlimited soul is already safe, secure, happy, abundant, loving, and free. As is the nature of profound truths, as we delve into them, many paradoxes arise. Even though the true nature of you and I is peace…we have forgotten and created instead a world of peacelessness.
So the journey back to our Original Peace requires lots of patience, slowing down, and awakening and honoring the Self. We can’t force our way to peace. We can get there by softening, going within, and by gradually increasing the moments we spend in stillness and peace step by step, day by day, hour by hour. This is what is called the “pilgrimage of rememberance. It is a way of waking through the consistent awareness of considering myself to be a Soul, seperate and distinct from the body. Remembering where I came from and who I belong to.
I the soul am a Cosmic Traveler, a visitor to this earth. I come from another place where I am immortal, peaceful, full of all virtues and completely viceless. As I awaken each day, I remember that I have come from a radiant world of Light, as a being of light, in order to be a Light in this world.
As we grow into our true spiritual identity, our awareness models to others what awakening can be. It is the ones who hold their love of the Creator and their inner self-respect dear who become truly great and help show the way Home for all. Everyone has the chance to awaken for it is the time for it to happen. We have all been waiting for this time to wake up to who we truly are!

A Quantum Revolution

In recent times our greatest revolution has been the discovery that human beings can change the outer aspects of their lives by changing the innermost attitudes of their minds. As a matter of fact, it is the only way to make change that matters and which is sustainable!

The way to restore our spiritual identity and dignity is not to reject matter but to use it for the claims of the Self.  This is possible when the soul is free from all cravings and is fully conscious of its own true status.  Then the individual dwells in the material and social environment without any hankering or attachment to them and can convert them to the benefit of spiritual life and service.  Real freedom expresses itself through unhampered dominion of the spirit over matter.

One sage has been known to say that “when the time is ripe, the advancement of a soul towards self-knowledge comes about as naturally  as the physical body of a child grows into a full-fledged form.”

Educators as Heroes

Quoting from the Living Values Educator Training Guide by Diane Tillman and Pilar Colomina:

“Around the globe, the media blames educators for declining test scores and problems with today’s youth.  This negative view is such a contrast to the real picture.  I see dedicated, hard-working educators, caring for students, striving to motivate and teach.  I see teachers as those who continually respond to the needs of youth and the needs of society.

Yet there has been a tremendous difference in the last twenty to thirty years in terms of overall student attitudes and behaviors.  The difference is not in the determination, professionalism or caring of teacers.  The difference is in the preparation of children who enter the school system and in the state of our society.

In recent years, two trends have especially increased the challenges of raising and educating children: growing materialism and violence in the entertainment media.  These have greatly impacted families, diverting time and focus away from traditional pastimes and the the transmission of cultural and spiritual values.

Many children spend far more time in front of the television (or ipad) than in front of their parents.  Many adults spend less and less time enjoying and interacting with their children and families as they try to gain security and happinessthrough materialistic pursuits–or simply try to cope with a more complex world.

Violence in entertainment has a profound influence on youth. Violent films, television programs, and video games not only glamorize violence, they sanction inhumanity, and normalize disrespect.  As disrespectful words, gestures, and expressions become commonplace, feelings of hurt, loneliness, alienation, and anger in turn become more prevalent in children, young adults, and even adults.  As relationships deteroirate and divorce rates increase, many children have few adults in their lives to nurture them.

In addition, watching more than four hours of television a day diminishes the development of chilren’s pychomotor, language, and social skills.  the entry skills that the majority of today’s children bring to school are far below what they used to be.

Traditionally, values were transmitted by parents and communities.  The call for values in education is asking educators to be the heroes, to fill society’s void.  It implores educators to be leaders in recognizing that technology and materialism are not enough.

As we move along in the twenty-first centruy, we must tap into the creative energy and universal values that each human being holds within.  Not only must we renew efforts to educate children, parents, and ourselves, but also utilize our hopes and reeeams for children to provide the emotional impetus.

As educators we have the power to facilitate the development of universal values and to reconnect with the values of our culture and the universal values that unite us all.”

This is the context in which  LIVING VALUES: AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM has arisen as a program embraced by the United Nations and supported by UNESCO.  UNESCO strongly believes in education as a means of creating peace and international understanding.

As Living Values: An Educational Program expands (now in over 60 countries), it is even more clear that values are the key that allow us to comprehend, face, and overcome the challenges present in today’s world.  This program has provided many educators with a new feeling of the relevance of education.  Values-based activities give our children real preparation for life.  The books and the training, as well as the continued support that has emerged around this important aspect of affective education arms teachers with a necessary component to their success in the classroom.

This training program helps each individual within the school to take part in creating a positive atmosphere of peace and respect which then creates a stable foundation to support the academic aims and goals.

Brilliant Disguises!

There is victory in making everyone genuinely happy by knowing the secrets of everyone’s heart.  To know the secrets of someone’s heart listen from an introverted state to the sound that emerges from his/her lips.  To the extent that you remain introverted will you understand the secrets of everyone’s heart.purple you are a soul

What You Remember~Shapes Who You Are

Movements  (transits) in your inner world are more powerful than any transits of the celestial bodies of our galaxy, for you are an eternal soul, a celestial soul and when self-aware, you are unlimited.  These words can not be proclaimed by the ego, which is simply a structure that has been constructed to make you fit into a world of other egos.

Now is the time to remember to speak as a soul, teach as a soul, and allow the light of who you are to dispel the accumulation of darkness generated by well intentioned, but seriously limited egos who have made the trends of today, what they are.

What you remember, that which you keep in the forefront of your being will mould and shape who you are!  By turning your mind within to behold the highest truth of who you are, and then proceeding to act in the world, gives you the greatest advantage and allows you to benefit not only yourself.  The benevolence that a soul carries is so unlimited it can impact the entire world for good!

So remember: “No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven to the human spirit”.

These words of truth were conceived by Helen Keller, a being born without the power to see, hear, or speak; a being who struggled for expression and light and through the strength of soul power moved forward in her life and is remembered, even today, as a champion of the unlimitedness of the human spirit.

Are you ready for such newness, greatness in your own life?  To recognize the power of the Self do what you do, with love and for the Highest Good of All.  This is a good start and will put you in good relationship with the Highest Laws of Creation.  Are you ready?
